HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Junior Brice Wilkinson (Madison, Miss.) fired a three-under 69 to lead the Southern Miss men's golf team to a sixth-place tie at the AutoTrader Collegiate Classic, Tuesday, in Duluth, Ga.
Wilkinson finished the event tied for 11th with a total score of 214 at the par-72, 6,706-yard Berkeley Hills Country Club, and was one of three Golden Eagles to place in the Top 20.
"Anytime you have three guys finish in the Top 20, individually, it is a good sign," said Southern Miss men's golf coach Eddie Brescher. "Hats off to those guys for leading our team this week with some solid scores."
Freshman Thongpipat Rattanayanon (Bangkok, Thailand) added a 72 over the final 18 holes to finish at 215 with a 13th-place tie, while Robbie Latter (Mississauga, Ontario) added a 73 for a 216 and a 17th-place tie.
One Golden Eagle, junior Brian Richards (Gulf Breeze, Fla.), playing as an independent, shot a 73 over his last circuit for a 225 total and a 54th-place tie.
Senior Walker Kesterson (Hartsburg, Mo.) collected a 73 over his final round to post a 227 score and a tie for 59th, while junior Hunter Atkins (West Point, Miss.) recorded an 80 for a 234 and a 71th-place tie.
The Golden Eagles shot under par as a team for the second-straight round, firing a one-under 287 to finish tied for sixth with Mercer with an 866 stroke total.
"We got off to a slow start this morning," said Brescher. "However, our guys had a good finish today so we could post a round under par. Sixth is not where we expected to finish this week. We will get a few days of practice in and get ready for Little Rock."
James Madison captured the team championship with a 20-under-par 844 to beat Lipscomb (849) by five strokes. USC Upstate (861) finished third, before Boston College (863), Davidson (865), Southern Miss and Mercer (866), host Georgia State (870), Richmond (872), WKU (875), Francis Marion (878), Stetson (893) and Nicholls State (905).
The Golden Eagles finish the fall portion of the season next week when they travel to Little Rock, Ark., Oct. 21-22, for the Little Rock Invitational which will be played at the Chenal Country Club.
