HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Darkness suspended play in the second round Monday afternoon, but the Southern Miss men's golf team enjoyed a solid opening day at the Health Plan Mountaineer Invitational by holding down third place after the opening circuit in Bridgeport, W.Va.
The Golden Eagles, playing at the par-72, 7,308-yard course at the Pete Dye Golf Club, shot a team round of 300 over the first 18 holes, just eight strokes behind leader Florida Atlantic and six strokes behind Florida Atlantic.
"Today was as challenging of a day on the course as I have ever seen," said Southern Miss coach Eddie Brescher. "The course set up was tough. Add in the cold temperatures and rain all day long...it makes for a difficult day of golf. Our guys have played solid to this point of the tournament. So far we have put up a good team effort.
"We have some shots to make up to catch the leader. If we minimize the mistakes that lead to bogies, then we will have a good change to catch the leaders over the next 21 holes."
Senior Walker Kesterson (Hartsburg, Mo.) led the way for the Golden Eagles in the opening round with a two-over 74, tying seven others for 10th place.
Freshmen Thongpipat Rattanayanon (Bangkok, Thailand) and Robbie Latters (Mississauga, Ontario) were one stroke back of Kesterson with a 75 and tied for 18th place, while junior Brice Wilkinson (Madison, Miss.) added a 76 for a 25th place after the first day. Junior Hunter Atkins (West Point, Miss.) added an 80 for a 47th-place tie.
Play was suspended with most golfer having finished between 12 and 15 holes of the second round. The event will pick back up at 7:30 a.m. CT Tuesday to finish the second round, before going straight to the third and final round.
