Golden Eagles Stay Hot at West Florida Invitational

PENSACOLA, Fla. – On the opening day of the West Florida Invitational, the Southern Miss women's tennis team cruised to an undefeated start in doubles play and dropped just one singles match against Lamar and Southeastern Louisiana. They continued that momentum into Saturday, going undefeated against West Florida. Arina Amaning had arguably the best win of her career, knocking off the No. 1 player in Division II women's tennis from a season ago.
Ebru Zeynep Yazgan and Amaning brought home the first Golden Eagle win on Friday by cruising to a two-set sweep over Cornejo/Himaniof Southeastern Louisiana. The freshman and junior dominated, winning 6-2, 6-1. Katia de la Garza following with a comeback win over Putri (SELA). The junior dropped a close first set but responded with a 6-4 win in the second set to force a deciding third frame. From there, de la Garza was able to squeak out a 10-8 decision. Monique Burton nearly capped off an undefeated morning for Southern Miss but fell in three sets.
In the afternoon dual against Lamar, Amaning won against Jasmin Buchta at the top singles position. The France native cruised to a 6-0 win in the first set before edging out. Denise Simonetti/Sanja Jolic in the second set, 7-6. De la Garza and Burton continued the hot doubles play en route to a 6-1, 6-1 win for the Golden Eagles.
Amaning continued to stay hot on Saturday, knocking off Berta Acerda, the No. 1 ranked singles player in Division II women's tennis. Acerda was also ranked as high as No. 870 in the world.
Yazgan rebounded after a Saturday injury to cruise to a victory. The Golden Eagles capped off a perfect day when de la Garza and Burton won their doubles match in three sets.
Southern Miss will be back in action at the ITA Southern Regionals starting on Oct. 17.
