Women’s Soccer Notches First C-USA Win of the Season After Knocking Off FIU, 3-0

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss women's soccer team (6-5-0, 1-2-0 C-USA) picked up its first C-USA win of the season after knocking off FIU (2-9-0, 0-4-0) 3-0 on Friday night.
Southern Miss captured an early 1-0 lead after junior forward Ariel Diaz scored in the 10th minute of play off of an assist by Hailey Pohevitz. The goal marked the third of the season for Diaz.
Junior midfielder JoAnnie Ramos added to Southern Miss' lead when she cashed in on a penalty kick in the 37th minute of the match. The goal marked the second of the season for the Katy, Texas native.
Redshirt junior forward Hailey Pohevitz capped of the scoring in the game after finding the back of the net on a header in the 52nd minute, putting the Golden Eagles on top, 3-0. Redshirt senior defender Kaitlin Fayard was credited with the assist on Pohevitz's goal.
After shutting out FIU, the Southern Miss backline has now tallied a total of five shutouts on the season.
Senior goalkeeper Karsen Gildea and redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Preston each logged substantial minutes in the second half. Preston started the second half in the net and racked up 29 minutes of playing time and two saves before giving way to Gildea. Gildea finished the game in the goal for the Golden Eagles, registering 17 minutes of playing time and two saves.
Southern Miss outshot FIU 8-5 in the contest. Each team recorded five shots on goal.
Southern Miss will enjoy a day off before hosting #19 FAU on Sunday, October 6. Kick-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. (CT) at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex.
Sunday's match will feature International Day and an Odds On Promotion (one Southern Miss student will be randomly selected to take five shots around the 18-yard box. If the student makes all five shots, they will go home with a prize of $10,000). In order to register for the Odds On Promotion, students must sign up at the marketing table just inside of the main gate at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex, on the day of the match.
