Women’s Soccer Captures Pivotal Conference Win at UTEP

EL PASO, Texas – With the regular season winding down, and a trip to the C-USA Tournament on the line, the Southern Miss women's soccer team (7-8-0, 2-5-0 C-USA) captured a pivotal conference win against UTEP (8-5-3, 3-3-1 C-USA) on Sunday afternoon at University Field. The Golden Eagles defeated the Miners by a final score of 3-1.
Led by the efforts of junior forward Ariel Diaz in the match, the Golden Eagles' offense wasted no time getting on the scoreboard.
Diaz put the Golden Eagles on top, 1-0 in the sixth minute of the match, after finding the back of the net on as assist from junior midfielder Jenny Caracheo. Diaz collected the ball that Caracheo sent on a cross to the left wing, and drilled it past UTEP goalkeeper Emily Parrott.
Freshman defender Madisyn Flammia extended Southern Miss' lead to 2-0 after scoring in the 15th minute off of an assist by junior midfielder JoAnnie Ramos. Ramos played a ball to Flammia off of a set Piece and Flammia finished it off. The goal marked the first of the Lynn Haven, Fla. native's Southern Miss career.

"Scoring my first collegiate goal has been something that I have dreamed of for a long time, and I am so grateful that I was given the opportunity to make it happen. The win was much more important though, and I really hope that it can propel us to wins in our next few games."
Southern Miss maintained its 2-0 lead until UTEP's Tessa Carlin scored in the 59th minute, cutting the scoring deficit in half. Lilly Marquez and Nicole Pugsley were each credited with an assist on Carlin's goal.
In the 76th minute, Diaz tallied her second goal of the afternoon, providing Southern Miss with insurance as the end of the match drew near.
Diaz's goal in 76th minute marks her seventh of the season, tying her with Hailey Pohevitz as Southern Miss leading goal scorer for the season. In addition, the goal also led to Diaz notching the first multi-goal game of her Southern Miss career. The Lubbock, Texas native is currently in her first season with Southern Miss after transferring from North Texas.

"I knew today was not going to be an easy game. My mindset entering today's game today was to give it my all, try to put points on the board, and go from there."
As a team, the Golden Eagles outshot the Miners 15-14 in the match.
The Golden Eagles will return to action on Friday, October 25 when they host the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders at 3:00 p.m. (CT) at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex.
Friday's match will be a Gold Out (All Southern Miss fans are encouraged to wear gold apparel to the match)! Gold Out shirts will be given away to fans as they enter the gates, while supplies last.
