HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss (1-14, 0-2 C-USA) women's volleyball team won in dramatic fashion against Alabama State (4-16, 1-4 SWAC) on Wednesday night, outlasting the Hornets in five sets (16-25, 25-17, 25-21, 21-25, 15-11) at Reed Green Coliseum.
With Liana Guillemaud and Gillian Hidalgo posting career nights in their first midweek matchup in the black and gold, the Golden Eagles climbed back from a first-set loss to remain undefeated against Alabama State. The second set, which the Golden Eagles won 25-21, used a Kaile Tuisamatatele kill to spark a 7-1 run. That turned into a six-point lead and continued to grow with a Piper Matsumoto kill. Ultimately, Kess Krutsinger sealed the deal with one of her nine kills.
In the third set, another Krutsinger kill put the Golden Eagles in front and they never looked back. Guillemaud, a freshman from Lucas, Texas, piled onto the lead with four kills in a set that Southern Miss won 25-21 to take a one-set lead.
With an opportunity to end the match, Southern Miss jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the fourth set. That lead grew to seven before Alabama State tied the set at 19. After a Guillemaud kill put the Golden Eagles up 21-20, the Hornets scored five consecutive points to force a fifth set.
Facing adversity early in the fifth set, the Golden Eagles punched back from a 7-3 deficit. Six consecutive points, including a point via an Alabama State red card, put the Golden Eagles ahead when the two teams switched sides. In that stretch, Madison Lawler served back-to-back aces.
Wrapping the match up in dramatic fashion, Tuisamatatele and Guillemaud ended things with a massive block at the net. In total, Hidalgo and Guillemuad combined for seven kills in the matches final set.
Guillemaud's career-high 15 kills paced the Golden Eagles in just their fourth match inside Reed Green Coliseum this season. Hidalgo, a fellow freshman, also added a career-high 14 kills on 40 attempts.
Matsumoto exploded for a career-high 45 assists and 15 digs, her fifth double-double of the season. The junior setter also added five kills.
