HATTIESBURG, Miss. -Â After stealing the first set from Conference USA foe North Texas (8-7, 2-1 C-USA), the Southern Miss (1-15, 0-3 C-USA) women's volleyball team dropped its C-USA home opener on Friday night in four sets (25-20, 22-25, 12-25, 11-25).Â
North Texas quickly jumped ahead in the first set but Gillian Hidalgo smacked one of her 15 kills to swing the momentum to the Southern Miss side. Back-to-back kills by Hidalgo two plays later put Southern Miss ahead by two and paved the way to a 25-20 first-set win. The Golden Eagles utilized a 7-2 run to pull away from the Mean Green and an Ashley Berry kill sealed the deal for the Golden Eagles in that first set.Â
North Texas managed to build significant leads in the next three sets leading the Golden Eagles to use early timeouts in an attempt to regroup. After head coach Stephanie Radecki used her final timeout in the second set, her Southern Miss team went on a 6-2 run to pull within six points. However, North Texas pulled away again, forcing the Golden Eagles to use an impressive 7-1 run to fight back to a one-point deficit. Ultimately, the Mean Green took the set by three points.Â
Over the final two sets, Southern Miss was held to 11 and 12 points, respectively. Hidalgo paced the Golden Eagles with a team-high 15 kills and a .235 hitting percentage. It was the second consecutive game where the freshman had at least 15 kills. Two days after posting a double-double, junior Piper Matsumoto dished out 40 assists and 13 digs for her sixth double-double of the season.Â
Madison Lawler, for the second consecutive game, had at least 20 digs. The junior libero accounted for 21 digs and four assists. Kaile Tuisamatatele and Kess Krutsinger each recorded two blocks in their first C-USA matches at Reed Green. Freshman Liana Guillemaud had 13 kills, two digs, and a block. As a team, the Golden Eagles finished a .199 hitting percentage.Â
