HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Freshmen Robbie Latter (Mississauga, Ontario) and Thongpipat Rattanyanon (Bangkok, Thailand) each registered below par second rounds to lead Southern Miss to a seventh-place tie after the opening day of the AutoTrader Collegiate Classic taking place in Duluth, Ga.
After opening with a team score of 295, the Golden Eagles registered a four-under par 284 over the final 18 holes by using a late charge by the squad, which included three rounds of par and below, to tie for seventh with both host Georgia State and Boston College at 579.
Latter shot a 69 and Rattanayanon added a 70 over the second round at the 6,706-yard, par-72 Berkley Hills Country Club to each post a 143 and a 13th-place tie.
"I am proud of our team for bouncing back in the afternoon round," said Southern Miss men's golf coach Eddie Brescher. "We dug ourselves a bit of a hole with our first round scores. However, our guys showed some maturity and grit by hanging in there to break par in round two."
Junior Brice Wilkinson (Madison, Miss.) added rounds of 73 and 72 for a 145 and a 21st-place tie.
Senior Walker Kesterson (Hartsburg, Mo.) and junior Hunter Atkins (West Point, Miss.) each collected a 154, two-round score to tie for 67th-place.
Junior Brian Richards (Gulf Breeze, Fla.), playing as an individual, shot an 80 and a 72 for a 152 and a 58th-place tie.
"The forecast for tomorrow does not call for ideal weather," said Brescher. "But we have played plenty of golf in adverse conditions. Our focus is on tomorrow and ending with a good round to make a move up the leaderboard."
Lipscomb and James Madison leads the team standings with a minus-15, 561, followed by USC Upstate (572), Mercer (576) and Davidson (577) to round out the top 5 schools.
There will be a shotgun start, Tuesday, at 7:30 a.m. CT for the final 18 holes.
