Youth Shines in Win Over Jackson State

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Golden Eagles (2-0, 0-0 C-USA) stayed hot at home en route to a 4-0 win over Jackson State (0-2, 0-0 SWAC). Southern Miss was backed by another strong day at doubles and a fabulous showing by its underclassmen.
Senior Rikeetha Pereira and freshman Ebru Zeynep Yazgan started things off with a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles, which matched their result against Florida A&M yesterday. After going unfinished against FAMU, Arina Amaning and Tjasa Jerse secured the doubles point for the Golden Eagles via a 6-2 win on court one.
"I thought we had great energy all match, which helped us come out strong in doubles," coach Steve Schram said. "We'll need that same energy tomorrow when we go to Alcorn State for a tough road match.
"Through our first two matches, I'm really pleased with how the girls have played."
Schram made a few changes in the singles lineup, but got the same result as yesterday -- three wins. Yazgan, who shined on court five, was the first Golden Eagle to wrap up their day after defeating Lucia Placidi 6-0, 6-2. On court four, Katia de la Garza dropped just one game en route to a 6-1, 6-0 win against Lily Zhang. With just one more point needed, Pereira took matters into her own hands. The senior dominated on court two as she defeated Oni Jones in convincing fashion. She won 6-1, 6-1, dropping just two games.
Monique Burton made her debut on court six, but went unfinished as she was leading 6-2, 5-1. Amaning also went unfinished on court one after winning the first set, 6-4. After playing at No. 4 singles yesterday, Jerse made the move to court three and was leading 6-4, 2-0, but went unfinished.
The Golden Eagles have won their first two matches for the first time since the 2016 season. The squad will look to make it three as they travel to Alcorn State for a Sunday matinee at 2 p.m.
