Women's Tennis Sweeps Short-Handed Alcorn State

LORMAN, Miss. - The Southern Miss women's tennis team defeated a short-handed Alcorn State team via a 4-0 sweep on Sunday afternoon in Lorman, Miss. The Golden Eagles (3-0, 0-0 C-USA) remained dominant in doubles play and utilized another solid outing from the bottom of their lineup.
The Golden Eagles started doubles with a 1-0 lead after the Lady Braves had to forfeit on court three. Rikeetha Pereira and Ebru Zeynep Yazgan stayed hot on court two en route a 6-2 win. Despite already locking up the doubles point, Arina Amaning and Tjasa Jerse played through to a 6-2 win over Anastasia Vaganova and Stefany Grlj on court one.
Against Jackson State and Florida A&M, the bottom three players in the Golden Eagle lineup produced three wins. On Sunday, that portion of the lineup stayed on fire with wins on court four and five. Katia de la Garza ran through Grlj without dropping a single game, winning 6-0, 6-0. Yazgan also flexed her muscles against Klavdija Bukovec with a 6-1, 6-0 win. With the Lady Braves short on players, Monique Burton locked up a win due to another forfeit.
Jerse won her first set on court three without dropping a game, but went unfinished. Amaning, on court one, went unfinished, but was tied at five in the first set with Bianca Birkenstock. Like Jerse, Pereira won her first set, but went unfinished against Vaganova.
The three-straight wins mark the programs best start since 2016. That 2016 squad opened the season with seven wins. The Golden Eagles will host West Alabama next time out. The match is slated for 2 p.m. on February 2.
