Golden Eagles Roll Past FAMU

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss Women's Tennis team opened up its 2019 slate against Florida A&M on Friday with a convincing win at the Southern Miss Tennis Facility. After starting out hot in doubles, the Golden Eagles cruised to a 4-0 win.
At No. 2 doubles, Rikeetha Pereira and Ebru Zeynep Yazgan snagged the Golden Eagles' first win via a 6-1 beating of Mialiniania Rakotondrazafy and Karen Machisa. That was followed by a Katia de la Garza and Tanit Lopez win at No. 3 doubles. At No. 1 doubles, Arina Amaning and Tjasa Jerse went unfinished, but held a 5-2 lead when the match was called.
"I felt that we started off very strong at doubles today to get the match rolling," said head coach Steve Schram. "Rikeetha closed out a close match at the end to help us secure the win. Overall, I was pleased with how the girls played today and we hope to get more of that tomorrow."
After sitting out in doubles, Anastasija Cobanovic dominated at No. 6 singles en route to a 6-0, 6-2 win. That was followed by de la Garza notching a win on court three, 6-3, 6-2. Pereira, a senior leader, locked up the Southern Miss win at No. 2 singles after beating Haleigh Porter 6-3,6-4.
Despite going unfinished on court one, Amaning was able to battle back from a first-set loss to snag the second set against Rakotondrazafy. Similarly, Jerse battled back from a 6-1 defeat to take the second set, and then a 5-0 lead in the third set. Yazgan, a freshman, was one point away from securing another Golden Eagle win, but went unfinished at 6-4,5-4.

The win marks the first of Schram's Southern Miss career. The Golden Eagles will be back on Saturday morning against Jackson State at 10 a.m.
