HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss Golden Eagles will look to get back in the win column Saturday afternoon when they host Marshall at 4 p.m. CT.
Fans unable to make it to Reed Green Coliseum can watch the game multiple ways. Mike Monaco and Tim Doyle will have the call on Stadium, which can be accessed on WatchStadium.com/live or Facebook.com/LiveCUSA. It is also available locally on FOX 23 and Comcast 219.
John Cox, the Voice of the Golden Eagles, will go on the air at 3:30 p.m. CT on the Southern Miss IMG Sports Network (Rock 104.5 in Hattiesburg/Laurel) and the USM Gameday app.
– Southern Miss fell 66-63 on Thursday night to WKU, one of the most-talented teams in the league. The Golden Eagles fought tooth-and-nail with highly-regarded NBA prospect Charles Bassey, who still finished with 14 points and 17 rebounds. Southern Miss did tie the Hilltoppers with 10 offensive rebounds and won the turnover battle 16-9. It was a 12-8 lead for the home squad before an 8-0 run gave WKU the lead for good.
– The Golden Eagles have led at the half in 20 out of its 22 home games since the start of the 2017-18 season. Thursday's 34-21 deficit to WKU was their second-largest intermission hole of the season (behind Nov. 20 game versus North Florida). The Black and Gold responded in a big way, scoring 16 points over the first 5:21 of the second half, and pulled within three points a few times down the stretch. Tyree Griffin knocked down a triple just before the final buzzer.
– Southern Miss has scored more points in the second half compared to the first in eight of its last nine games (only exception at Rice). The Golden Eagles' 36.4 percent deep shooting is both the best mark of the Doc Sadler era and second in C-USA.
– LaDavius Draine connected on four consecutive three-point attempts in the second half, and 13 of the sophomore's 16 double-figure scoring games have come against C-USA foes. This year against league competition, he is leading in three-point shooting (54.5 percent), tied for second in overall makes (24) and No. 8 for field goal percentage (53.8).
– Southern Miss has dropped its last two games against Marshall, 85-75 in the C-USA Semifinals and 85-66 in Huntington that began C-USA play. Cortez Edwards shot 65.6 percent (21-32) in those two games, averaging 24.0 ppg. Griffin was also 14-for-29 (48.3 percent) with 19 points and seven assists per game. The semifinal game was also a 12:30 p.m. start after Southern Miss had beaten No. 1 Middle Tennesse in overtime the previous night. Marshall, which had a first-round bye, went on to win the league title and take down No. 4 Wichita State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Edwards also scored 16 in a 91-76 win over Marshall on Feb. 2, 2017 in Hattiesburg.
– Leonard Harper-Baker's second-career double-double on Thursday night also saw him reach personal-bests for scoring (18 points) and rebounding (15). The latter marked the most by a Golden Eagle since the late Jonathan MIlls on March 27, 2013 versus BYU. Since going 4-for-21 from the foul line over an eight-game stretch, he is 15-for-22 (68 percent). Harper-Baker also had 14 rebounds at ODU on Jan. 19.
– Marshall's high-octane offense has taken 60 or more shots in 16 of its 20 games. On the flip side, Southern Miss has seen seven teams take that many in its 19 games, winning three of them (SE Baptist, Troy, UAB). The Herd rank No. 1 in league play for scoring (80.7 ppg), free-throw percentage (78.5), field goal percentage (47.1), assists (15.0) and steals (10.1).
– Southern Miss is the only C-USA school to have not allowed 80 points in a game this season (The Herd offense has done it 10 times). It happened to the Golden Eagles eight times in each of the last two seasons, and this current 20-game streak is a single-season best since the 2011-12 squad did so in its final 24 games. The Golden Eagles are allowing their opponents a 40.5 percent shooting clip this season after it was 46.1 last year.
– Southern Miss is No. 3 nationally for assist-turnover ratio (1.70) and No. 4 for fewest turnovers (9.7 pg). In league play, the Golden Eagles have the best three-point percentage (39.6) and assist/turnover ratio (1.5), while sitting at No. 2 for assists (14.8) and No. 5 in steals (6.4).
– Griffin against C-USA opponents is first in assists (6.8), first in assist-turnover ratio (2.7) and third in steals (2.3), while Edwards ranks 10th in assists (3.6) and fourth in assist/turnover ratio (1.9). Griffin now ranks No. 10 all-time in school history with 333 assists (despite less than two years with the program), and his 6.7 dimes per game rank 10th nationally.
