Southern Miss Starts Conference Play Against Rice

The Lady Eagles begin the new year in Conference, playing Rice on Jan. 3.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Lady Eagles begin the 2019 portion of their season on Thurs., Jan. 3 at 6pm in Reed Green Coliseum when they take on the Rice Owls to also begin conference play.
The Lady Eagles (8-5) are coming off a difficult loss to the Houston Cougars, but look to start the new year off right with a Conference win against Rice. Shonte Hailes returned from injury against the Cougars, and continues to lead the team in assists with 53. Megan Brown leads with 185 points and is still rising in the all-time career games list for Southern Miss, now tied for 15th with 113. Redshirt freshman Kelsey Jones continues to show out, still leading the team in rebounds with 71. She also leads the conference in field goal percentage at .754, going 52-59 from the field.
The Lady Eagles lead the series against Rice, 8-7, with a winning record in Reed Green at 5-3. The Owls head to Reed Green with a 9-3 record. Junior Erica Ogwumike leads the team in points, rebounds and assists and was named Preseason Player of the Year by Conference USA. The Owls last time out ended in a 74-63 win over Incarnate Word, and haven't played on their home court for three games now. Their five-game series on the road will end following their matchup against Louisiana Tech.
