HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss tied a school-record low circuit of 273 in the second round of the 16th annual Sam Hall Intercollegiate, Monday, to hold down second place in the event being held at the Hattiesburg Country Club.
"We had a tough start to the day but it shows the strength that our guys have to bounce back after at one point being at the bottom of the pack," said Southern Miss coach Eddie Brescher. "To come from that far behind and be in a position to win a golf tournament, it shows how resilient our guys are and I couldn't be any more proud as they stepped up and tied a school record for 18 holes."
Being played on the par 71, 6,902-yard course, junior Matt Lorenz (Gulf Shores, Ala.) carded a pair of 69s to shoot a 138 total to put him in a second-place tie in the event at four-under par. Fellow junior Walker Kesterson (Hartsburg, Mo.) added a 74 and the lowest round of the day of 65, which also ties for the seventh-lowest round in the tournament's history. Kesterson is tied for fourth in the event.
"It doesn't come as any kind of surprise from a current state amateur champion," said Brescher on the play of Lorenz. "Matt has all the tools that you could ever ask for of a player his age. I imagine he likes his chances on the individual side tomorrow, same as we do as a team."
The Golden Eagles shot a 291 opening round, before coming back with a nine-under 273 for a 564 score, one stroke behind Mercer (286 and 277) for the lead at 563. Southern Miss finds itself a stroke ahead of both Troy and Missouri State (565) in the team standings and six strokes ahead of Florida Gulf Coast in the 13-team event.
Freshman Joey Kirkland (West Monroe, La.) added a 74 and a 68 for a 142 and a 15th-place tie, while sophomore Brian Richards (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) is tied for 30th with rounds of 74 and 71 for a 145. Senior Derick Kelting (Amarillo, Texas) added rounds of 78 and 73 for a 151 and a 59th-place tie.
Five other Golden Eagles, playing as individuals, included senior Nathan Corchis (Water Sound, Fla.) with a 145 (73-72) and a 30th-place tie, senior Willie Hammond (Southlake, Texas) at 147 (76-71) and a 46th-place tie, along with sophomore Hunter Atkins (West Point, Miss./74-79) and senior Philip Heine (Madison, Miss./72-81) who each are in a 65th-place tie at 153. Freshman Charles-Eric Belanger (Quebec City, Quebec) rounded out the Southern Miss scorers with a 77 and 83 for a 160 and in 78th place.
The final 18 holes in the tournament take place Tuesday with a fix start beginning at 8 a.m. The Golden Eagles are not scheduled to begin their final round at 9:30 a.m.
