HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss women's golf program begins the Lucy Nunn era with the three-day, USA Intercollegiate in Mobile, Ala., beginning Saturday.
"It's been fairly easy," Nunn said of the adjustments following her four-year stint on the Houston staff. "They have been so open and honest with me and asking questions. I've also asked them a lot of questions, it's been great for both ends. They are excited about getting back to school and in the swing of things."
The 2018 USA Intercollegiate will be held at the Magnolia Grove Crossings Golf Course, a par-72, 6,316-yard range. The field features Alabama State, Arkansas State, Cal Baptist, Georgia State, Houston Baptist, Lamar, Little Rock McNeese State, South Alabama (host), Stetson, Tulane, UAB, UT Arlington, ULM and WKU.
Valentina Haupt, Cassidy Evreniadis, Miranda Holt, Julie Baker and Henrietta Syr will compete for the Golden Eagles. Evreniadis, a native of Adelaide, South Australia, comes to Hattiesburg following an All-American season at Iowa Western CC. Syr is back on the links after redshirting last year to recover from a shoulder injury. Nunn has also commended Syr for monitoring her health by keeping up with her workouts, practices and icing.
This trip back to Magnolia Grove will bring back wonderful memories for Haupt and Syr, as the pair helped Southern Miss to the championship and a school-record, 877 that broke the previous top mark of 895 from the 2012-13 season. The Golden Eagles started the day with a five-stroke lead and continued to pull ahead, leading by as many as nine strokes going into the turn.
Syr and Haupt finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in that title march.
Haupt was one of two on the team last year to compete in all 30 rounds, compiling the No. 2 stroke average (75.7).
Nunn, who was hired in May as school was letting out, kept up with her student-athletes throughout the summer, regardless of their distance, and made sure to visit with those who came back to town in the summer. She also says it has been a strong team dynamic thus far.
"They look out for each other," she said. "Cassidy is the only newbie, and they've all taken to her really well. It's been cool to see them all interact with each other. There isn't one person who stands out, because I think they collectively are really bought in to help their team."
Nunn's strong resume begins with her standout career at Arkansas that led to a stint on the LPGA Futures Tour before coaching stops at Kentucky and Houston. As for her first head job, it is business as usual.
"There are a few more emails," she said. "But it's mostly the same, it's dealing with people and trying to figure out how they operate at their best. It's about trying things now."
