HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss men's golf team fired a team score of 313 over the rain-shortened opening day of the Lone Star Invitational Monday, which is being played at the par 72, 7,435-yard TPC San Antonio Oaks Course.
A four-hour delay of play due to heavy rains midway through the day, following the sixth hole of play, forced tournament officials to cut the number of holes from 36 to 18 with an additional 18 holes more slated to conclude the event on Tuesday, starting with an 8 a.m., shotgun start.
The duo of senior Derick Kelting (Amarillo, Texas) and sophomore Walker Kesterson (Hartsburg, Mo.) led the Golden Eagles as each player posted a five-over 77 during the opening round, which placed them in a 42nd-place tie. Kelting let the Golden Eagles with five pars during the first round.
Sophomore Brian Richards (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) found himself two strokes behind with a seven-over 79, while senior Willie Hammond (Southlake, Texas) posted an eight-over 80 and sophomore Hunter Atkins (West Point, Miss.) added an 83.
"The last twelve holes were certainly scoreable," said Southern Miss men's golf coach Eddie Brescher. "We did a poor job executing and taking advantage of the favorable conditions for the afternoon. However, there were multiple teams that struggled as well for the afternoon."
The Golden Eagles find themselves tied for 13th with UTEP, while host UTSA leads the team standings with a one-over 289. Arkansas State is two strokes back (291) in second place, followed by Little Rock (295), Sam Houston State (296), Texas State (297), ULM (298), Louisiana-Lafayette (300), North Texas (303), UT Arlington (308), McNeese State (309), South Alabama (310) and Rice (311). Following Southern Miss and UTEP is Lipcomb (325) to round out the standings.
"We are in a position to make a sizeable move tomorrow. If we go out firing tomorrow, we can definitely make a jump up the board to close strong."
