
Soccer Will Look to Continue Winning Streak at Grambling State

The Southern Miss soccer team is seeking their third straight win
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss soccer team returns to the pitch on Friday, August 31st. The Golden Eagles will travel to Grambling, La. for a 5:00 p.m. (CT) road contest against the Grambling State Tigers at the GSU Soccer Complex.
Southern Miss (2-1) will be coming off of their second consecutive 7-0 victory. The Golden Eagles defeated ULM 7-0 on Sunday, August 19th and then defeated Texas Southern by a final score of 7-0 on Friday, August 24th.
The Golden Eagles currently lead C-USA with 14 goals scored and an average of 4.667 goals scored per game.
Sophomore Miah Zuazua turned in her second multi-goal performance of the season. The Dallas, Texas native matched her season high after scoring two goals in the Golden Eagles' 7-0 shutout against Texas Southern. Zuazua currently leads C-USA in two offensive categories including, points per game (3.67 Avg/G) and goals per game (1.33 Avg/G). Zuazua is tied with Louisiana Tech's Mylene Roy-Ouellet as the conference leader in goals scored (4) and points (11). Zuazua is also tied with Roy-Ouellet, Middle Tennessee's Sam Debien and Louisiana Tech's Kaylee Zettler as the conference leader in game-winning goals (2).
In addition to Zuazua's multi-goal performance, senior midfielder Stephanie Garcia also logged her first multi-goal game of the season after scoring two goals in Friday's contest. Sophomore midfielders Keely Hoppmeyer and JoAnnie Ramos along with freshman midfielder Olivia Durham each collected the first goals of their collegiate careers. Hoppmeyer, Ramos and Durham all scored one goal each. Zuazua picked up her third assist of the season and now leads the Golden Eagles in assists. Ola Akinniyi and Morgan Robertson were credited with their first assists of the season. Akinniyi and Robertson finished the game with one assist each. Robertson's assist was also the first of her collegiate career. Â
The Grambling State Tigers (1-3) will host the Golden Eagles in what will be their first home match of the 2018 season. The Tigers began their season with four road contests against Lamar, Nicholls State, Idaho and Eastern Washington. Their lone win of the season came against Nicholls State on August 19th. Grambling State defeated Nicholls State by final score of 2-1.
Southern Miss and Grambling State have met just one time on the pitch in the history of the two programs. The meeting between the two schools occurred on August 31, 2017 at the USM Track & Field and Soccer Complex. The Golden Eagles came away with a 4-1 victory over the Tigers. Â
