HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Head Coach Jon Stuart has announced the addition of Casey Fonnesbeck to the Track and Field staff as an assistant coach. His specialty will be working with the throwers.

Head Coach Jon Stuart
"I'm excited to add Casey to our staff where he will be taking over a very important group of student-athletes for us. There will be no shortage of talent for him to work with here at Southern Miss as these athletes have scored many points at the Conference Championships and have sent several members to the National Championships. We know our athletes are in good hands with his extensive background."
Â
Fonnesbeck, a Franklin, Idaho native, graduated from the University of Illinois in 2010, where he competed on the Track and Field team for all four years. During his time with the Fighting Illini, he threw his way into the all-time top-10 list for shot-put, hammer and weight throw in the 2008 and 2009 seasons, as well as scored at the Big Ten Track & Field Championships. He qualified for the Division I Mideast Regional Championships in 2007, 2008 and 2009. He was team captain in his last two seasons as well as earned Academic All-Big Ten accolades for his sophomore, junior and senior seasons. He earned his bachelor's degree in Sports Management.
Â
After graduation he went to Arizona State in pursuit of his master's degree and also competed for the Sun Devils. He scored at the Pac 10 Championships and also qualified for the NCAA Division I West Regional Championships. He was a Maroon and Gold Scholar and earned all-varsity status. He earned his master's degree in Higher and Post-Secondary Education from ASU.
Â
Master's degree in hand, Fonnesbeck started Club Fonnesbeck, a throwing club, which focused on high school athletes interested in shot-put, discus, hammer, weight and javelin. He coached 12 State Champions, five State Runner-Ups, 22 individual Regional Champions, 48 total state placers, had athletes break 10 school records, and had four throwers sign Division I scholarships.
Â
Fonnesbeck also helped student-athletes inside the classroom as an academic counselor at Arizona State, Utah State and Illinois.
