Soccer falls 3-0 to Bulldogs in season opener

STARKVILLE, Miss. -- Mississippi State's goals in the third and 30th minutes of Thursday night's action were enough to down Southern Miss, 3-0, on Opening Night.
The Bulldogs got their first shot of the game 30 seconds in, and broke into the scoring column at 3:10 on a MaKayla Waldner goal off a rebound. The second goal came at 30:07 on a header by Gabriella Coleman that came via a cross into the box.
Miah Zuazua, an All-Conference USA Freshman Team member last season, had a shot saved in the 36th minute.
Coleman concluded the scoring with a header off a deep ball into the box in the 80th minute.
Goalkeeper Kendell Mindnich made her second-career start and provided six saves. She and defenders Ola Akinniyi and Caitlin Pierce played all 90 minutes. Mississippi State had a 13-5 margin in fouls. Four newcomers made their Southern Miss debuts, including junior college transfer Jessica Shepherd and freshman Olivia Durham, as well as rookies Rana Hussein and Kaleigh Killeen in reserve duty.
This was Southern Miss' first season-opening loss since 2014.
The Golden Eagles (0-1) will look to rebound with a Sunday battle against ULM at 1 p.m.
