HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- A one-hour, 58-minute storm delay was of little impact for the Southern Miss soccer team as it rolled to a 7-0 win over ULM on Sunday afternoon.
The deluge of rain, with lightning as well, occurred in the 38th minute of play, and the teams had just an eight-minute halftime intermission. The seven goals marked the team's most since scoring a school-record 10 against Jackson State in 2017.
Miah Zuazua and Rana Hussein each scored a pair of goals, while freshmen Morgan Robertson and Kaleigh Killeen also got in the scoring column for the first time of their careers. Zuazua and JoAnnie Ramos also added two assists.
Jennyfer Caracheo, Stephanie Garcia and Ola Akinniyi accounted for the team's other goals. The last one, in the seventh minute, came as Akinniyi picked up a steal, dribbled some, and fired one in off a one-on-one battle with the goalie. Garcia and Zuazua each attempted a game-high six shots.
Kendell Mindnich played the first half while Oregon transfer Sarah Preston took over the second. Southern Miss had a 30-5 shots advantage (14 in the first half, 16 in the second)Â and needed only one save. ULM posted seven.
Southern Miss has allowed just three goals in its last five home games, dating back to last season.Â
The Golden Eagles (1-1) remain at home Friday when they take on Texas Southern at 4 p.m. CT.Â
