Former Southern Miss pitcher Cody Carroll (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.) earned his Major League Baseball call up Tuesday by the Baltimore Orioles.
Carroll, who is in his fourth year in professional baseball, got selected in the 2015 MLB First-Year Player Draft in the 22nd Round by the New York Yankees.
The right-handed hurler was a member of the Yankees organization until earlier this month when a trade sent him to the Orioles, and he was assigned to the Norfolk (Va.) Tides in Triple A.
In 34 relief appearances for both the Scranton/Wilkes Barre (Pa.) Railriders and the Tides this season, Carroll posted a 4-0 record while registering nine saves in 12 opportunities with a 2.47 earned run average. In 43 2/3 innings of work, he allowed 28 hits, 14 runs (12 earned), 18 walks and 57 strikeouts. Carroll also made the International League All-Star team earlier this month.
Carroll, will wear No. 49, and dress for the Orioles tonight against his former team, New York, when Baltimore starts a two-game series at Yankee Stadium tonight.
In other MLB news, former Golden Eagle standout Brian Dozier was traded today to the Los Angeles Dodgers from the Minnesota Twins. Dozier made his MLB debut with the Twins on May 7, 2012, against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
With his call up, Carroll becomes the 18th former Golden Eagle to play in the big leagues when he makes his debut.
