HATTIESBURG, Miss. â€" The Southern Miss Baseball team returns to Hattiesburg to host eight games over a 10-day stretch when they open a three-game series with Conference USA rival Rice.
The Golden Eagles (17-6 overall, 4-1 C-USA) host the Rice Owls for their second home conference series of the season starting with a 6 p.m. contest, Friday, followed by a 2 p.m. game, Saturday, and a single 1 p.m. contest to finish the series on Sunday.
After a two home run game at Ole Miss Tuesday, Hunter Slater is now tied with Luke Reynolds for team-high six home runs this season and boasts a .370 batting average. Slater leads the squad with 34 hits and 27 RBI, second in C-USA.
Right-hander Nick Sandlin returns to the mound on Friday for Southern Miss with a league- leading 60 strikeouts. Sandlin is 3-0 this season with a 1.58 ERA allowing only 25 hits.
Left-hander Stevie Powers takes over on Saturday for game 2 against the Owls. Through 31 innings pitched, Powers has tossed 31 strike outs with a 3.19 ERA. Right-hander Walker Powell earns his second-straight Sunday start after a career-high night in Boca Raton. Powell's 7 1/3 innings and seven strikeouts helped Southern Miss win the series against FAU.
The Rice Owls are 4-6 in its last 10 games and post an 11-16 overall record. The Owls opened up conference play at LA Tech and were swept in Ruston and were outscored 21-9. They secured its first conference win in the first game of the series against Western Kentucky but dropped the series losing the final two.
Rice leads the series against Southern Miss with a 26-17 record with the two sides each winning two of the four scheduled games last season. The Golden Eagles won two of the three conference games but lost in the C-USA Championship Finals 5-4.
Friday's game will have Gold Southern Miss Eagles shirts given away to the first 200 fans, John Cox Bobble Heads will be handed out to the first 750 fans in attendance and Sunday's game will host an Easter Egg Hunt on the field prior to the game.
