NEW ORLEANS - Walker Powell threw six shutout innings and Mason Irby tied a career-high with four hits to lead No. 15 Southern Miss over Tulane 12-3 Wednesday night at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
The Golden Eagles improved to 12-4 on the year as they won their fourth contest in a row. The Green Wave fell to 8-10.
Powell allowed just four hits over his career-high inning total, while also fanning a career-best six as he improved to 1-1 on the season.
Irby, who also drove in three runs, led the Golden Eagle offensive attack as the squad registered 15 hits in the contest.
Southern Miss jumped out to an early lead with a solo run in the second. Daniel Keating led off the frame with an infield single and then went to third after a passed ball and a sacrifice by Cole Donaldson. Irby then doubled down the leftfield line to score Keating.
The Golden Eagles extended their lead with four runs one inning later. With one out, Luke Reynolds walked before Matt Wallner homered over the rightfield wall for his second roundtripper of the year. Irby later added a run-scoring single and LeeMarcus Boyd forced in a run on a muffed catch by the Green Wave first baseman.
The visitors then put the game out of reach in the contest with six more runs in the fourth.
The first three runs scored on bases loaded walks to Keating, Irby and Boyd. Gabe Montenegro, who came in to pinch hit, drove in two with a single and Matthew Guidry finished the inning's scoring with an RBI single of his own.
Donaldson completed the Golden Eagle scoring with a sacrifice fly in the fifth.
The Green Wave added their lone runs in the eight on a bases-loaded walk, a run-scoring single and a passed ball.
The win was the second in the last three games between the two schools as Southern Miss collected its first win in New Orleans since defeating the Green Wave 8-4 on May 12, 2015.
The Golden Eagles return home this weekend when they open Conference USA play with UTSA at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field. The two teams will play a single game Friday at 6 p.m., followed by solo contests Saturday, at 2 p.m., and Sunday, at 1 p.m.
