The team sets a new school record for lowest score and Sandra Szpott places the highest in school history.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Southern Miss Cross Country team heads back to Hattiesburg after placing 11th at the NCAA DI South Regionals. The team had 248 points, the lowest in school history.
On a cloudy and humid morning in Tallahassee, the women of Southern Miss cross country finished the 6k with a total time of 1:49:01, placing 11th at the NCAA DI South Regionals. The team had 248 points overall, the lowest in school history. The 2016 team now falls behind the 2018 squad as the second-lowest point total with 333 and stays tied for the highest placement at 11th with the teams from 2018 and 2013.
Sandra Szpott has risen to the top in her first year with Southern Miss, finishing first out of all her teammates in each race she has been a part of. In the South Regionals, she placed 13th, now the highest in school history, running the 6k with a time of 20:59.1. Stephanie Legerwood becomes the second-highest finish, placing 15th in the 2012 South Regionals. Szpott, finishing top-25, has been named All-Region.

"We had a pretty good team day. We were right there with a bunch of the teams ahead of us and we feel really good about today. We ran much better than we did at the Conference Meet. Sandra had a breakout day, falling just seconds short of being an automatic qualifier for the NCAA Championships. She had a huge day. Kate also had a big day, she's been battling and working her way through this season and I think she's got a lot of confidence going into the winter and preparing for the Indoor season. There's a lot of racing left to do for her. Emma Kate had a solid day and a big year. For someone who was a fringe role player last year to being such a huge help on the team this year; she's improved a lot. Monika and Regen closed it out for us and I'm proud of this team. They showed they could compete against some of the top teams nationally and this was a great way to end the cross country season and going into track. We're in a great spot and I'm really excited about what we can accomplish."
The Finishes
#13 Sandra Szpott, 20:59.1
#33 Kate Mattox, 21:24.1
#59 Emma Kate Holdbrooks, 22:00.9

#77 Regen McGee, 22:28.5
#86 Lina May, 22:40.3
