HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss athletics department mourns the passing of former track and field athlete Donald Daley.
"The Southern Miss family grieves over the loss of former track and field student-athlete Donald Daley," said Director of Athletics Jon Gilbert. "Donald contributed in numerous ways to our athletic department by representing himself as a great student and a successful athlete. He was a tremendous teammate to his fellow track and field student-athletes, and he proudly represented Southern Miss and his family with significant class and grace."Â
Daley, a native of Miami, Fla., was a standout performer for the Golden Eagles after transferring from Barton Community College in Kansas, where he was a two-time first-team All-American. Daley was a gold medalist in the discus throw and earned a silver for the weight throw as a junior at the C-USA Outdoor and Indoor championships, respectively, and as a senior finished fourth in the weight and hammer throws at the conference championships, among his successes in the Black and Gold.
"I was saddened to hear about Donald's passing," said Southern Miss head track coach Jon Stuart. "Donald was a great competitor for us but more importantly he was a wonderful person with an infectious personality and was a true friend to all. I will miss him greatly."
Information on memorial services will be shared when available.
