WBB to Face Grambling State in Sunday Matinee

The Lady Eagles will be playing the Tigers for the first time since 2013.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Lady Eagles take on the Grambling State Tigers for the second game of the season in Reed Green Coliseum for an afternoon game with tipoff set for 2pm.Â

Southern Miss (1-0) will face Grambling State (1-1) for the first time since 2013, when the Lady Eagles defeated the Tigers 76-51 in Reed Green.  The Lady Eagles lead the series 4-1, with all four wins taking place on their home court. The streak is two wins in Southern Miss' favor and the team looks to continue it.Â

Grambling State is coming off a 75-41 win against McNeese State, where senior Jazmin Boyd had a double-double and Shakyla Hill was two rebounds and two assists away from a triple-double. Shakyla Hill currently leads her team in points and assists. Against McNeese State her career point total surpassed the 1,500 mark, and she increased her career rebounds to 700. Last season, Hill recorded only the fourth quadruple double in women's collegiate basketball history against Alabama State.Â

Southern Miss is coming off a win against cross-town foe William Carey, where they defeated the Crusaders 74-48 in Reed Green Coliseum. All six newcomers saw playing time, and Kelsey Jones had a break out performance with a double-double. She had 15 rebounds and 13 points. She is now tied for second-most rebounds in a game as a freshman. Camille Anderson, who sat out last season due to transfer requirements, had one 3-pointer against the Crusaders; the lone three pointer for the Golden Eagles. True freshman Destiny Smith showed her talent to the Golden Eagle crowd as she played aggressively on both sides of the ball. Shonte Hailes led the team in assists with 6, the 23rd time she's had five or more assists in her career and 32nd time to lead the team in assists. Hailes showed her leadership and dominance on the court, even adding some finesse to her game with a behind-the-back pass to senior Megan Brown for a layup.The Lady Eagles led against the Crusaders for the majority of the game and played a fast-paced, high-energy ball game.
