HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss shot a final-round, two-under par 286 to finish the Wolfpack Intercollegiate with a 855 team total, Sunday, with an eighth-place showing at the Lonnie Poole Golf Club in Raleigh, N.C.
The Golden Eagles finished nine-under par overall for a team in the 15-team event at the par 72, 7,358-yard course. Host NC State won the overall title with a minus-31, 833 team total.
"I am very proud of the way our guys fought through the ups and downs this week," said Southern Miss coach Eddie Brescher. "These boys are tough and it shows. Obviously, we want to finish higher on the leaderboard but each time we made a mistake, the attitude of each guy was to birdie the next hole. As a coach, that is exactly what you want from your team."
Freshman Joey Kirkland (West Monroe, La.) posted a final-round 74 for top Golden Eagle finisher honors with a 213 and a 19th-place tie, just one stroke ahead of junior Matt Lorenz (Gulf Shores, Ala.), who posted a 70 over his final 18 holes, for a 214 and 23th-place tie.
Senior Nathan Corchis (Water Sound, Fla.) added a 73 over his first circuit for a 218 stroke total and a 40th-place tie, while junior Walker Kesterson (Hartsburg, Mo.) added a 70 for a 219 and a 48th-place tie. Sophomore Brian Richards (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) rounded out the Golden Eagle finishers with a 73 over his final round for a 222 stroke total and a 61st-place tie.
"Our team is filled with experience and talent," said Brescher "The sky is the limit for this year's team. I can't wait to get to our next event, clean up our mistakes and compete."
NC State defeated Jacksonville by seven strokes (840), followed by UNCG (846), Campbell (847), East Carolina (850), Maryland (853), Virginia Tech (854), Southern Miss (855), UNCW (857), High Point (861), Wofford (870), Georgia State (884), George Mason (884), Loyola-Maryland (893) and Lipscomb (899).
The Golden Eagles return to action, Oct. 15-16, when they travel to Ruston, La., for the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate, being played at the Squire Creek Country Club.
