Men’s Golf Completes Jerry Weeks Match Play Event Monday

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss men's golf team dropped a pair of tight matches, losing to both Louisiana Tech and Louisiana-Lafayette, Monday, in the 3rd annual Jerry Weeks Match Play event held at the par-72, 6,902-yard Hattiesburg Country Club course.
The Golden Eagles dropped both matches, 3-2, in which pitted a pair of Conference USA schools – Southern Miss and Louisiana Tech – along with a pair of Sun Belt schools – South Alabama and Louisiana-Lafayette - against each other with the winners and losers of each match playing for the championship and consolation later in the day.
Southern Miss got wins in the opening match against Louisiana Tech from junior Walker Kesterson (Hartsburg, Mo.) and sophomore Brian Richards (Gulf Breeze, Fla.). Kesterson upended Trey Poteet 4&2, while Richards defeated Karsten Green 3&2. Kesterson also collected a hole-in-one on the 197-yard, No. 7 hole with a 4-iron. It was his fourth career ace.
In the consolation round against the Ragin' Cajuns, sophomore Hunter Atkins (West Point, Miss.) grabbed a 2&1 decision over Jack Tolson, while both junior Matt Lorenz (Gulf Shores, Ala.) and freshman Joey Kirkland (West Monroe, La.) each halved their matches to each receive a half-point in the best of five match.
Louisiana Tech defeated South Alabama in championship match 4-1.
The Golden Eagles return to action April 8-9 at the Ryman Hospital Intercollegiate at Richland Country Club in Nashville, Tenn.
