Lady Eagles Take Down Mississippi College in Exhibition Game

The Lady Eagles topped the Choctaws, 65-36.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Lady Eagles came out on top in their exhibition game against Mississippi College on Monday night, winning 65-36 over the Choctaws.
Starting for Southern Miss were Shonte Hailes, Amber Landing, Megan Brown, Alarie Mayze and Respect Leaphart.
The veterans of the Lady Eagle squad led the team, with Megan Brown scoring 15 points and Shonte Hailes scoring 13. Respect Leaphart wasn't far behind with 10, including going 2-for-2 from the 3-point line.
The Choctaws weren't able to make a 3-pointer thanks to the Lady Eagles defense, whereas Southern Miss was 5-for-16 from the 3-point line thanks to Leaphart, Smith, Brown and Allie Kennedy.
Destiny Smith made an impact in her first game as a Lady Eagle, the freshman finishing with seven points, two rebounds and two assists. She went 1-for-3 from the 3-point line.
Head Coach Joye Lee-McNelis' fast paced game style was in full effect against the Choctaws, as the Lady Eagles played with a tremendous amount of hustle. Southern Miss held the lead for a total of 39 minutes.
The team had 19 steals in comparison to the Choctaw's 10 and earned 10 points off of fastbreaks. There were a fair amount of turnovers from both squads, but the Lady Eagles beat Mississippi College out in rebounding with 28 defensive rebounds and 20 offensive rebounds.
Shonte Hailes led the team in rebounds, assists and steals for the majority of the game. She tallied eight rebounds, four assists and five steals for Southern Miss. Amber Landing had seven rebounds and had one of two blocks for the Lady Eagles.

The Lady Eagles will open regular-season play with the home opener against William Carey in Reed Green Coliseum on Tuesday, Nov. 6 at 11 a.m. The William Carey game is also Education Day for Southern Miss, where students and faculty from schools in the Pine Belt area are invited to come enjoy a Lady Eagle Basketball game and experience being on a college campus.
