HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Senior Derick Kelting fired a 74 and junior Walker Kesterson added a 73 to lead Southern Miss over the final round of the Steelwood Collegiate Invitational, Sunday, at the Steelwood Country Club in Loxley, Ala.
Both Kelting and Kesterson finished the event with a 54-hole total of 220 to each tie for 22nd place. Junior Matt Lorenz ended his final round with a 75 to finish two strokes behind his teammates at 222 and a 31st-place tie.
Freshman Joey Kirkland posted a 79 for a 227 total and a 49th-place tie, while sophomore Brian Richards rounded out the Golden Eagle scorers with a final-round 75 and a 231 total for a tie for 55th place.
"I am proud of our guys for fighting until the end today," said first-year coach Eddie Brescher. "We had a good round going today with a good chance to pick up some wins. A couple of late bogeys on some tough holes hurt, but our guys are tough and always get the most they can."
The Golden Eagles shot a nine-over 297 over the final round to improve their final team standing one place after finishing the opening day in eighth.
No. 7 ranked Wake Forest won the event by 16 strokes, besting Mississippi State with a 20-under-par 844, while the Bulldogs posted an 860. The team standings then included Kennesaw State (866), Indiana (869), Kentucky (883), South Alabama (884), Southern Miss (885), Richmond (887), Kansas State (889), Rice (898), and North Alabama and Wofford (903).
Eric Bae of Wake Forest won the individualist honor with a nine-under 207, beating Brock Ochsenreiter of Indiana by two strokes.
"We will carry over a lot of positives from the fall season," said Brescher. "This group has a ton of potential so we are excited for the spring season."
The Golden Eagles return to action in the spring, Feb. 2, when they play LaTour Collegiate Classic, a one-day, one-round event at the LaTour Golf Course in Mathews, La.
