HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss scored in the final inning of a pair of fall games against Nicholls here Sunday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field to collect a victory and a tie in their first of two fall exhibition dates.
The Golden Eagles registered a pair of home runs in the ninth of the opening game to pull off a 4-3 victory over the Colonels, and then notched a sacrifice fly in the fifth-inning nightcap to force a 5-5 tie.
Five Colonel pitchers limited the Golden Eagles to just one hit in the opening game heading into the ninth.
Gabe Montenegro, though, led off the final frame by being hit by a pitch. Danny Lynch then followed with a single before Matt Wallner tied the game with a three-run blast to right-centerfield. The Colonels then went to the bullpen and immediately got Hunter Slater to fly out to third. Brant Blaylock then collected the game-winner with a home run of his own to hand the Golden Eagles the victory.
In the nightcap, Southern Miss jumped out to a 4-0 lead after a frame as they registered RBI singles from Erick Hoard, Charlie Fischer, Jacob Edwards and Logan McGrew.
Nicholls tallied a pair of runs in the second and one in the third, before Ivan Prejean put the visitors ahead 5-4 in the fifth on a two-run single. The Golden Eagles, though, forced the tie in the final frame on a sacrifice fly by McGrew.
The Golden Eagles finish their fall season next Sunday when they play at Tulane. Game time is set for 12 noon.
