Golden Eagles Host C-USA Foe UAB

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -Â With Conference USA play winding down and the playoff hunt heating up, the Southern Miss volleyball team welcomes UAB into town for a critical match. The Golden Eagles and Blazers are set for a 6 p.m. serve on Friday at Reed Green Coliseum.Â
The last time out
The Golden Eagles haven't played in a week, but defeated Marshall in four sets (25-20, 19-25, 25-21, 25-17) the last time out. Kylie Grandy, who sits at No. 3 in career kills at Southern Miss, led the way with a game-high 22 kills. The Herd were able to snag the second set before Southern Miss bounced back to take the final two sets.Â
Sarah Bell had a game-high 54 helpers and added 11 digs to aid the Golden Eagle defense. Kellie Garraway added 13 digs to go along with Grandy and Lawler's 11. Alexis Coombs reached 12 kills and also stuffed five Marshall attacks. Ashley Berry posted a game-high six blocks en route to improving the Golden Eagles' record to 13-12 and 5-5 in C-USA play.Â
Scouting UAB
The Blazers head to Hattiesburg with a 13-12 record and a 5-6 record in C-USA play. The Blazers defeated perennial C-USA power WKU in four sets before hitting a three-game skid. UAB is backed by sophomore Abby Carlile's 248 kills and 2.95 kills per set. Sophomore Shelby Holderfield has a team-high 915 assists and has added 186 digs.Â
At the net, Emily Rudolph has 84 blocks and Victoria Young has 77, which 22 of them are solo blocks. Holderfield's average of 10.40 assists per set ranks her at third in C-USA among all setters. Rudolph's .97 blocks per set slots her at No. 8 in the C-USA ranks.Â
What's at stake
With just four C-USA games remaining on the Southern Miss schedule, this game could arguably be one of the biggest ones down the stretch. The Golden Eagles currently sit in seventh place with UAB and Charlotte a game behind. The final three games for the Golden Eagles are against LA Tech and North Texas (twice).Â
