HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Homecoming weekend is here on the Southern Miss campus with the Golden Eagles welcoming Conference USA West Division foe UTSA in a 6 p.m., contest, Saturday, at Carlisle-Faulkner Field at M.M. Roberts Stadium.
The Golden Eagles (2-3 overall, 1-1 C-USA) look to snap a current two-game losing streak as the theme for this year's special event is "Sweet Home Southern Miss." The Roadrunners (3-4, 2-1) hopes to return to their winning ways after losing at home to Louisiana Tech 31-3 last weekend.
The game can be seen on ESPN+, as well as heard on one of the affiliates on the Southern Miss IMG Sports Network.
Southern Miss holds a 59-22 all-time record in homecoming contests and has won 13 of its last 17 homecoming games, including the last three after beating UTEP, 24-0, last season. This will be the second time UTSA has served as the Golden Eagles' homecoming foe, as the two schools played the 2014 edition with the home squad winning 32-10.
This will be the fifth meeting for the schools in football as the series is even at 2-2. The Roadrunners travel to Hattiesburg for only the second time after playing the last two years in San Antonio. Southern Miss captured a 31-29 decision at the Alamodome in 2017.
The Roadrunners are coached by Frank Wilson, who served as a Golden Eagle assistant during the 2008 season. UTSA cornerbacks coach Deron Wilson, nephew of Frank, played for Southern Miss and lettered rom 2010-12.
UTSA brings in a squad that ranks No. 122 nationally in rushing offense (99.9) and No. 115 in Passing offense (155.7). They face a Golden Eagle defense that ranks No. 20 in the FBS, allowing just 322.6 yards a game. On defense, the Roadrunners allows 371.0 yards per game on defense, ranking No. 58 in the FBS in total defense.
As for the Golden Eagle offense, they continue to be led by Jack Abraham, who has thrown for 1,581 yards and 12 touchdowns with only six interceptions. His top target is sophomore wide receiver Quez Watkins, who has team highs of 36 catches and 461 receiving yards to go along with seven touchdown receptions – including at least one in each game this season.
Senior Picasso Nelson, Jr., leads the Golden Eagles on defense with 29 tackles, including 2.5 for loss.
