The Golden Eagles ran for a season-high 218 yards and allowed a season-low 174 yards total offense as Southern Miss snapped a two-game losing streak with a 27-17 Conference USA West Division victory over the Roadrunners before 21,259 at M.M. Roberts Stadium.
Southern Miss built a 27-3 lead early in the third quarter before a trio of turnovers disfigured the Golden Eagles' offensive rhythm and led to the Roadrunners' two touchdowns.
"There are times I look out there and I see an excellent football team," Southern Miss coach Jay Hopson said. "Then we have times where sometimes we sputter and stop ourselves a little bit.
"But for the most part, it was a really good team win."
Running behind a revamped offensive front, freshman running back Trivenskey Mosley rushed for a career-high 142 yards on 26 carries and caught three passes for 38 yards.
Sophomore running back Steve Anderson bulled his way for 51 yards and a touchdown on nine carries.
Sophomore quarterback Jack Abraham, who completed 28-of-33 passes for 269 yards and a score, also contributed to the rush, netting 28 yards on six carries and scoring the first rushing touchdown of his Southern Miss career.
Sophomore receiver Tim Jones piled up a career-best 107 yards receiving on seven catches and junior Jordan Mitchell added 41 yards and his third reception of the year on six catches.
All told, Southern Miss (3-3, 2-1 C-USA) rolled up 497 yards total offense against just 174 yards managed by the Roadrunners (3-5, 2-2).
"We ran the ball well and threw the ball well," Hopson said. "Defensively, we played aggressively and physical and tackled well."
UTSA gave freshman Jordan Weeks his first career start at quarterback, and he wound up completing 12-of-27 passes for 117 yards and a touchdown as he found himself under duress most of the game.
Weeks was sacked six times for minus 33 yards, contributing to the Roadrunners' bottom line rushing total of just 57 yards.
Anderson scored on a 2-yard run, Abraham threw 6 yards to Mitchell and senior Parker Shaunfield added field goals of 22 yards and 29 yards in the first half. When Abraham scored on 2-yard early in the third quarter, USM led 27-3 just 89 seconds into the second half.
But turnovers threw a wrench into the USM offensive flow and led directly to a pair of UTSA scores.
A fumble by junior tight end Jay-Shawn Washington set up Weeks' 2-yard scoring pass to senior receiver Greg Campbell Jr. late in the third quarter.
Moments later, Abraham was intercepted by UTSA senior cornerback C.J. Levine, who returned the pass eight yards for a touchdown.
Southern Miss sophomore receiver Quez Watkins, who made five catches for 37 yards, saw a five-game streak with at least one touchdown catch snapped.
southern Miss will visit Charlotte at 1 p.m. next Saturday.
