HATTIESBURG, Miss.-- Two quick victories and a gritty one summed up the night for Southern Miss in a sweep of ULM (25-11, 25-15, 25-23) on Tuesday night inside Reed Green Coliseum.
"Tonight it was nice to get a lot of different faces in and some experience, which will be big going forward in the rest of this season," head coach Amanda Berkley said. "Overall, I thought we saw some nice things. There are definitely some things we need to focus on going forward. We got to see a number of different things and looks. It was just a good team win."
The Golden Eagles (7-2) are 34-6 at home dating back to the start of the 2014 season and have swept ULM in all six head-to-head meetings since 1993.
Chandler Marshall's kill put Southern Miss up 6-3 in that final set, the only separation of three or more points between the teams. The Warhawks picked up a service ace to take a 20-19 lead, but a ball-handling and attack error gave away the lead and forced a timeout. Southern Miss again found itself down down one, but Alexis Coombs swung home a kill and Breleigh Favre collected two in a row to put the Golden Eagles at match-point. A Warhawk kill and attack error ensued.
Sarah Bell had five kills on six attempts, with no errors, for an .833 hitting percentage. She has a .538 mark over her last four matches with increased kill numbers each time. This season she holds a .431 overall clip.
Southern Miss now sets its eyes toward the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Classic, hosted by Tulane. The Golden Eagles battle the Green Wave Friday night at 7 p.m. before taking on Oklahoma and Nicholls the following day.
NOTABLE
-Southern Miss held ULM to an .069 hitting percentage after an .043 one in the previous head-to-head contest.
-That defensive showing still only marked the third-best of the season, with only Alabama and UL Lafayette finishing with lower percentages.
-The team's 13 errors were one off a season-low.
-Breleigh Favre had a career-high three blocks.
-Kelsey Chambers had five kills in the first two sets, her most in a match since Nov. 12, 2015 vs. UTSA.
-Ashley Chapman's third-set service ace was the third of her career.
