NEW ORLEANS -- The Tulane Green Wave turned it up a notch after a first-set defeat and came back to topple Southern Miss in straight sets (25-20, 19-25, 16-25, 17-25) inside Devlin Fieldhouse.
"We started off the game like we were ready to play," head coach Amanda Berkley said. "As soon as Tulane pushed us, we didn't have any push back. Tulane played great defense and that is where we need to step up in order to play with teams like Tulane."
Southern Miss (7-3) hit .286 and .217 in the first two sets, but the Green Wave (6-2) were able to force more errors in the final two en route to the victory. In the process, Tulane rebounded from a slow start to hit .322 over the middle two rounds. Eight blocks on the night also helped its cause.
The Green Wave's final .259 hitting percentage was the highest-allowed by Southern Miss, which entered play with the No. 40 defense in the country.
The Golden Eagles will wake up tomorrow with a pair of matches on the schedule. First up is a 10 a.m. battle with Oklahoma that can also be found on TheScore 1400 in Hattiesburg, before rounding out the action at 4:30 p.m. against Nicholls.
