IRVING, Texas -- More rewards have come about for the Southern Miss baseball team, this time on the academic front, with the announcement that pitchers Kirk McCarty (Hattiesburg, Miss.) and Nick Sandlin (Evans, Ga.) made the 2017 InTouch Credit Union Conference USA All-Academic team.
The two each maintain a flawless 4.0 GPA and both received the Commissioner's Academic Medal. McCarty, a junior lefty, has been the top starter for the nationally-ranked Golden Eagles this season and was a 2016 All-Conference USA first-team selection. The accounting major earned the Posey-Munn Book Award at the 2016 College of Business Awards. Sandlin, a sophomore righty, has eight wins and six saves as a reliever, while McCarty is tied for the league lead with nine wins on the season in his sophomore campaign. He is a construction engineering technology major.
McCarty is one of four repeat honorees on the list. The two also made the CoSIDA Academic All-District team earlier in the month.
No. 11 Southern Miss begins postseason play Wednesday at 4 p.m. against UTSA in The First, A National Banking Association 2017 C-USA Championship in Biloxi at MGM Park.
