
Women's Tennis Drops Close Match In Tampa

TAMPA, Fla. -- The Southern Miss Women's Tennis team dropped its second straight match in a close 4-3 loss to Florida Gulf Coast.
FGCU jumped on the early lead by taking the doubles point with wins in all three doubles matches.
Elena Roca secured the Golden Eagles first point of the match in straight sets with a 6-2, 6-1 win. Roca's win was the first of three straight singles match wins to put the Golden Eagles within in one point of winning the dual. Alex Kitchen and Tjasa Jerse won their matches 7-5, 6-1 and 6-4, 6-4 respectively.
Rikeetha Pereira battled Julia Ascua in a tiebreaker in both sets but ultimately fell 7-6)2), 7-6(4). The Golden Eagles dropped the following two sets to lose their second match of the season.
The Golden Eagles are now 1-2 and return home to face Xavier (La.) on Tuesday at 2:30 and UL-Lafayette on Feb. 10.
"We played two tough teams this weekend but we learned that we are a very good team and we need to keep working," Head Coach Dominic Modise said.
