HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss Women's Tennis team won its home opener after sweeping Jackson State 7-0 at the Southern Miss Tennis Facility.
The Golden Eagles had the upper-hand early after two quick wins from doubles partners Carolin Drescher and Alex Kitchen and Elena Roca and Tjasa Jerse. The two pairs wins earned the doubles point but the No. 2 doubles pair of Rikeetha Pereira and Tzu-Hui Chen sealed another win with a 6-4 finish.
Drescher and Kitchen have won their last two doubles matches on opening day with their win against the Lady Tigers.
Chen used her late win momentum heading into singles play and received the next point with a quick 6-2, 6-0 victory at the No. 6 spot in singles. Jerse finished close behind with her 6-1, 6-1 victory against her Lady Tigers opponent.
Drescher had a tough battle at the No. 1 spot going back and forth with Lady Tigers, Tyler Smith, but pulled away in the second set. Drescher went on to win 6-4, 6-1.
Kitchen battled at the No. 2 spot sticking to her own game despite the high lob shots from Zhang on the opposite side of the net. Kitchen pulled away with a 6-2, 6-1 win.
"It was good to get this win on our season opener," Head Coach Dominic Modise said. "We got some early nerves out of the way but I happy with the performance we displayed today."
The Golden Eagles hit the road for two matches in Florida to play Florida Gulf Coast and USF on Feb. 3 and Feb. 4.
