HATTIESBURG, Miss. â€" The Southern Miss soccer team lost 1-0 against Mississippi State for its first loss of the season in front of a record-breaking crowd of 950 fans.
The Golden Eagles were able to hold the Bulldogs scoreless until half even after the eight shot attempts by the Bulldogs. A hard-fought game was full of aggression and defense with each team committing 10 fouls.
The Bulldogs didn't get on the board until the 50th minute. A long throw-in from Bulldogs defender, Ari Holmes, caused chaos in front of the net and ended up deflecting off a Southern Miss player for the only goal of the game.
Both teams continued to attack and tried to create scoring opportunities. The Golden Eagles had six shots in the second half with Becky McMullan leading the way with two shots on goal including a last second shot from 20-yards out.
Despite the loss, coach Mohammed El-Zare was happy with his team's performance.
"It was a tremendous effort by the entire team," El-Zare said. "We continued to battle until the last second. I cannot ask for more and they gave everything they can."
The Golden Eagles (3-1-0) host Lamar Friday, Sept. 9, at 4 p.m. at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex.
