Weathersby Leads Men's Golf in Border Olympics

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss senior men's golfer Hayes Weathersby (Poplarville, Miss.) collected five birdies over the final 18 holes of the Border Olympics in Laredo, Texas, Saturday, to lead the Golden Eagles with a one-under 71 in the 36-hole event.
Played at the par 72, 7,325-yard Laredo Country Club, Weathersby ended his tournament with a one-over 145, after completing the first round with a 74, to finish tied for 40th.
Freshman Derick Kelting (Amarillo, Texas) shot a pair of 73s for the Golden Eagles to finish the event with a two-over 146 and end in a 48th-place tie, while redshirt freshman Nathan Corchis (Water Sound, Fla.) ended with rounds of 74 and 75 with a 149, which placed him in a 67th-place tie.
Fellow freshman Willie Hammond (Southlake, Texas) fired two rounds of 76 for a 152 and an 83rd-place tie, while junior Ryan Argotsinger (Kansas City, Mo.) collected rounds of 79 and 76 for a 155, tying his for 94th-place in the event.
The Golden Eagles shot rounds of 297 and 295 to place 17th in the 18 team field with a stroke total of 592.
No. 26 Baylor won the event with a 20-under 556, besting No. 37 ranked Houston by eight strokes at 564.
Rice finished third (567), followed by Sam Houston State and Louisiana-Lafayette (569), McNeese State (572), Sacramento State (574), UTSA and Texas State (577), Notre Dame (579), UTEP and ULM (580), New Mexico State (581), Stephen F. Austin (584), Nevada (589), Little Rock (591), Southern Miss and St. Mary's (Texas) at 607.
The Golden Eagles return to action March 28-29 at the Little Rock/First Tee Collegiate at the Chenal Country Club in Little Rock, Ark.
