
Women's Tennis Team Defeats Georgia Southern 6-1

STATESBORO, Ga. -- The Southern Miss women's tennis team won the doubles point then took five of six singles in claiming a 6-1 victory of Georgia Southern Friday afternoon at Hanner Tennis Complex.
The Golden Eagles improved to 9-2 overall while Georgia Southern dropped to 7-4.
"This was a good win," Head Coach Dominic Modise said. "We fought hard as a team. I'm proud of the ladies."
The Golden Eagles took the early lead winning the doubles point. Carolin Drescher and Alex Kitchen started with a 6-3 win at No. 1 over Lindsay Truscott and Mariana Ranzahuer. Elena Roca and Tjasa Jerse defeated Mary Phillips Smith and Emilia Bujan on court 2 by the score of 6-3 in clinching the point.
Southern Miss quickly took victories at No. 2, No. 6 and No. 5 in clinching the match win at 4-0. Kitchen downed Ranzahuer 6-1, 6-0. Elena Roca followed with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Smith and Claudia Castella clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-2 win against Francisca Norregaard.
Rounding out the remaining singles, Drescher dropped her match at No. 1 to Guilia Riepe. Tjasa Jerse defeated Emilia Bujan 6-7, 6-4, 11-9 at No. 4 and Rikeetha Pereira defeated Truscott 1-6, 6-0, 6-3 at No. 3.
Southern Miss continues its road swing with a match against UNC Greensboro in Statesboro, Ga.
