
Women's Golf Finishes 21st in Kiawah Island Classic

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss women's golf team fired its tournament low round of 304 over the final 18 holes to place 21st in the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Spring Classic in Kiawah Island, S.C., Tuesday.
Junior Emily Ross (Diamondhead, Miss) shot the Golden Eagles best round of the day with an even par 72 to finish the 54-hole event with a 227 to collect a 42nd-place tie.
Fellow junior, Kelly Erasmus of Capetown, South Africa, tallied a 75 over her final 18 holes to end one stroke back of Ross at 228 and in a 53rd-place tie.
Freshman Henriette Syr of Oslo, Norway, who has not shot higher than 79 in her first six collegiate rounds of her career, ended her tournament with a 78 for a 233 stroke total and a 96th-place tie. Junior Devon Spriddle (Lethbridge, Alberta) notched a 79 over her final circuit to complete her tournament with a 235 and a 109th-place tie.
The Golden Eagles other freshman, Valentina Haupt (Santiago, Chile), shot an 80 to finish with a 239 stroke total and a tied for 134th-place.
Coastal Carolina won the team championship with a final team round of 282 to finish with a seven-over 871, beating Chattanooga (879) by eight strokes. College of Charleston (884) finished third, with Old Dominion (889), placing fourth and Elon (896) rounding out the top five.
The Golden Eagles ended with a team score of 922 for its 21st place, finishing a stroke ahead of Boston University and two strokes ahead of Samford in a field that is tabbed as the largest in a collegiate tournament during the year.
Chattanooga's Emily McLennan and Troy's Fatima Cano tied for individual medalist honors, both finishing with a six-under 210.
The Golden Eagles return to action when they play host to the Lady Eagle Classic at the Hattiesburg Country Club, March 7-8.
