HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Members of the 2016 Southern Miss baseball team will be presented their Conference USA Championship rings at Saturday night's HOMECOMING football game versus Marshall.
The Golden Eagles won 41 games, including an incredible 26-4 mark at home, and advanced to postseason play for the first time since 2011. They made it to the NCAA Regionals after a 3-2 win against Rice on a walk-off play at the plate in the final game of the C-USA Championships presented by Buffalo Wild Wings. Southern Miss then knocked off South Alabama, 14-2, in the Tallahassee Regional opener.
Three players from the team were selected in the 2016 MLB Draft. The New York Yankees took Tim Lynch in the ninth round before Jake Winston went in the 17th to the Arizona Diamondbacks, and Chuckie Robinson was picked up in the 21st by the Houston Astros.
First-Team All-Conference accolades went to Lynch, Robinson, Dylan Burdeaux, Kirk McCarty and Jake Sandlin. Cord Cockrell earned Second-Team honors while Nick Sandlin and Hunter Slater made the All-Freshman Team.
Sandlin was also a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American, the second straight year a Golden Eagle made the esteemed list (Taylor Braley).
The squad opens its season with a three-game home series versus Northeastern (Feb. 17-19).
