HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss women's cross country team finished seventh overall with 210 points over several regionally ranked teams at the Crimson Classic.
Dana Dillistone led the way with a personal record and a 29th place finish with a time of 21:40.7. Closely followed by freshman Monika Gebarzewska (21:43.2) and Theresa Harto (21:47.1). Seniors Daphney Stanford (22:11.5) and Courtney Filliben (22:15.8) rounded out the top five. The spread from one to five was 35 seconds.
Quotes from cross country coach Aaron Kindt:
"Really happy with our effort today. Running a 6k for the first time this season and getting into a race like this after a long block of training, I was a little concerned with how we would handle in the middle but we kept our composure and we were able to run a really strong race."
"Dana really helped set the tone getting out and mixing it up with the front runners of this race. It was a great experience for her and I am excited to see her take this race with her into championship season."
"Monika has spent the first part of the fall recovering and building back up after a long track season overseas. Not only was this her first race of the season, but her first ever 6k. To see her fighting and competing the way she did at the last 2k was tremendous."
"Theresa Harto keeps getting better and better each week. She has been the little spark plug we needed to take that next step as a team."
"Daphney Stanford and Courtney Filliben did a good job staying locked in and competing. Both have had challenging weeks battling illness, but they fought through and were a big reason why we were able to accomplish what we did today."
"We have a lot of momentum going into championship season, still several things as a group we need to work on, but definitely excited at where the team is at this point in the season."
Next up for the Golden Eagles is the Conference USA Championship that is being hosted by Charlotte on Oct. 29. For more updates follow the team on Twitter @SouthernMissXC.
