HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss baseball coach Scott Berry announced Wednesday the addition of right-handed pitchers J.C. Keys (Hattiesburg, Miss.) and Hunter Stevens (Huntington Beach, Calif.) for the 2016 season.
"We are excited to be adding a pair of quality right-handed pitchers to our program for next season," said Southern Miss coach Scott Berry. "We get a local product that enjoyed a solid prep career in J.C., and a pitcher out of junior college in Texas. We expect both to come in and help our program next season."
Keys, at 6-feet, 175-lbs., comes to Southern Miss after a standout career at Oak Grove High School. During his senior campaign, Keys posted a 10-2 record with a 1.64 earned run average for the South State champion Warriors. The first-team All-State selection in Class 6A fanned 117 and walked just 48 in 81 innings of work this spring and a pair of no-hitters.
Offensively, he batted .336 with 20 runs, a homer and 27 RBI.
Stevens, 6-foot-5, 220-lbs., comes to Southern Miss after one season at Panola College in Carthage, Texas. In his lone season, he allowed 46 hits and 37 runs (27 earned runs) with 39 walks and 49 strikeouts to go along with a 4.61 ERA. He also played one season at Golden West College before transferring to Panola College. Stevens also prepped at Marina High School.
These two signees join right-handed pitchers Houston Case (Brookhaven, Miss./Hinds Community College), Walker Powell (Fayetteville, Ark./Fayetteville HS), Hayden Roberts (Irvington, Ala./Alabama Southern CC), Nick Sandlin (Evans, Ga./Greenbrier HS), Sam Walley (Taylorsville, Miss.), along with infielders Storme Cooper (Wentzville, Mo./Timberland HS), Matthew Guidry (Hattiesburg, Miss./Oak Grove HS) and Tracy Hadley (Pascagoula, Miss./Pearl River CC), as well as catchers Bryant Bowen (Shreveport, La./Captain Shreve HS) and Claudio Ruberia (Miami, Fla./Wabash Valley CC) and left-handed pitcher Stephen Powers (Savannah, Ga./Benedict HS) as additions for the 2016 season.
