HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Kirk McCarty and two Southern Miss relievers combined to record the second consecutive shutout in a 4-0 victory over Marshall in Conference USA action here Saturday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The Golden Eagles (27-16-1 overall, 12-10 C-USA) collected school-record seventh shutout for a season and also registered their season-high fifth-straight victory.
McCarty limited the Thundering Herd to just six hits over 7 2/3 innings and fanned seven in the contest to earn the victory and improve to 4-1 on the year. Luke Lowery, who appeared in his team-best 23rd game, retired the only batter he faced and Ryan Milton threw a perfect ninth to complete the blanking of Marshall (16-29, 8-15).
"We're pitching the ball well and playing good defense," said Southern Miss coach Scott Berry. "We didn't swing the bats as well (today), but we were able to put up four runs and that was enough behind a very good performance from Kirk (McCarty) and (Luke) Lowery and then (Ryan) Milton there at the end."
Marshall starter Michael Taylor, who was a late fill-in starting pitcher due to an illness to the previously stated starter, JD Hammer for the Herd, and was effectively wild for 3 2/3 innings. Taylor (1-5) suffered the loss by allowing a pair of runs on three hits with eight walks and four strikeouts, but made the Golden Eagles leave the bases loaded over the first three innings.
The home squad did scratch across a run in the third on an infield single to third base by Nick Dawson.
Dylan Burdeaux added to the lead by stealing on a fake double steal in the fourth, before Chase Scott extended his hitting streak to a team-best 13 games in the sixth on a run-scoring double to leftfield.
Tim Lynch then added a RBI double of his own in the eighth to complete the scoring. The school also welcomed back the 1990 baseball team for the contest, which was the first in school history to reach the NCAA Tournament.
The Golden Eagles will go after the sweep in the series finale, Sunday, in an 11 a.m., start.
