Fernandez Wins Old Waverly Collegiate Classic

West Point, Miss. -- Senior Casey Fernandez fired a final round 66 to finish 11-under par and win the Old Waverly Collegiate Classic, hosted by Mississippi State. The tournament was played at the par-72, 7,088-yard Old Waverly Country Club.
"I'm really proud of Casey," said Southern Miss head coach Jerry Weeks. "He played really great golf all day long. The final two rounds he was 10-under par. He just played outstanding and beat a great field. Hopefully, he can take this momentum and carry it forward."
It is Fernandez' third victory this year. His 11-under par and 54-hole score of 205 are both the third lowest in school history. His two rounds in the 60's now give him nine for his career, which is the third-most in school history and his three rounds of par or better give him 10 on the year and 29 for his career, the sixth most in school history.
"I relied a lot on my short game," said Fernandez. "I chipped and putted really well. I have to say that the new short game facility is helping out a lot with that. I just got the ball rolling and it went from there."
Southern Miss fired a four-under 284, the lowest round of the day. It finished 21-over par in 14th-place, five strokes ahead of Louisiana-Lafayette.
Added Weeks, "We tied for the low round today. It's certainly a step in the right direction. We've just got to keep working and get ready for conference here in a couple of weeks."
Senior Drew Kirby tied for 45th-place at seven-over par. He fired an even-par 72 in the final round, giving him 10 rounds of par or better on the year and 16 for his career.
Sophomore Ryan Argotsinger finished 10-over par after carding a final round 74. Junior Hayes Weathersby finished in a 73rd-place tie, 15-over par after posting a 72, his fifth round of par or better this year. Freshman Vasili Kartos finished 32-over par in 84th-place after shooting a 78.
UAB won the team tournament at 14-under par, one stroke ahead of Florida.
The Golden Eagles close out the regular season Apr. 26-29, when it travels to Texarkana, Ark., for the Conference USA Championships.
