HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss baseball team continues its current nine-game homestand when it plays host to a pair of midweek contests on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The Golden Eagles (8-6-1) entertain South Dakota State and Tulane, respectively, and both games are slated to start at 6 p.m., at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field. Southern Miss snapped a two-game losing streak on Sunday as they scored a season-high run total in a 12-2 victory over Oakland.
South Dakota State enters the game with a 5-6 mark prior to a Monday afternoon game at Tougaloo, while Tulane has amassed a 12-4 record entering the Wednesday contest.
Pitching has been the highlight for the Golden Eagles over the first 15 games as the team has posted a paltry 2.40 earned run average, which is tied with Rice for second best in the league. In fact, the program has won the last two Conference USA Pitchers of the Week. Cord Cockrell garnered the honor this week after beating No. 22 Ole Miss last Wednesday and James McMahon tallied the honor the previous time it was given out.
Offensively, senior designated hitter Matt Durst holds a current team-best, eight-game hitting streak and posts team best this season in average (.396) in hits (21) and tied for the team lead in double with four. The Whitehouse, Texas, native also has registered a home run and nine RBI on the year.
Following the two midweek contests, the Golden Eagles open C-USA play this weekend when they entertain FIU in a three-game series. Game times are set for 6 p.m., on Friday, 2 p.m., on Saturday and 12 noon on Sunday.
