HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss women's golf team shot its tournament-low 300 in the final round of the Bearkat Women's Invitational in Huntsville, Texas, Tuesday, to finish fourth in the event.
The 300 tied the team's season-low round as the Golden Eagles posted a 907 team score in the event.
"We were consistent over the entire 54 holes and our scores did not waver," said Southern Miss coach Erika Brennan. "You are always encouraged to have your final round be your best in the event and we have been able to do that in our first two tournaments."
Junior Kelly Erasmus (Capetown, South Africa) shot an individual team-low round of one-over-par 72 to take home a 15th-place tie with an overall stroke total of 224. Junior Emily Ross (Diamondhead, Miss.) finished just two strokes behind Erasmus with a 226, putting together a final-round 76 to earn a 19th-place tie.
Golden Eagle teammate, junior Devon Spriddle (Lethbridge, Alberta), shot a final-round 78 to end with a 229 and a 24th-place finish, while sophomore Belen Abrile (Cordoba, Argentina) ended with a 74 to garner a 31st-place tie with a 232 stroke total. Freshman Valentina Haupt (Santiago, Chile) shot a third-round 81 to end her tournament with a 236 and tied for 42nd.
Houston Baptist, which led after the first two rounds, put together a team-score of 289 in the final round to capture the team championship with an 882 stroke total. HBU's Brook Johnston shot a 54-hole, four-over 217 to capture the individual medalist honor, beating teammate Aries Ramirez by one stroke.
Following HBU in the team scoring was Central Arkansas at 902, Lamar at 903, Southern Miss at 907, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 911, Sam Houston State at 914, McNeese State and Stephen F. Austin at 918, McLennan Community College at 923, Alabama State at 925, Tyler Junior College at 944, Texas Wesleyan at 966, ULM at 968, Western Texas Community College at 977 and Texas Southern at 994.
After two tournaments this fall, the Golden Eagles have two top-five team finishes to their credit. For Brennan, it is a matter of improving on some things that they know to correct before the team's next tournament.
"For us, it is a matter of knowing what we need to work on and we are going to make sure we get those little things taken care of before our next event in a week and a half," said Brennan. "Overall, (assistant) coach Eddie (Brescher) and I are extremely encouraged by the team's play early in the season and I have no doubt that our best golf is ahead of use. We know that we can do some good stuff this season."
The Golden Eagles return to action Oct. 19-20 at the Fred Marx Invitational at Calvert Crossing Country Club in Monroe, La.
